A BIG DEFICIT.
AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB’S POSITION. CLASSIC RACES DELETED. AUCKLAND; July 5. “I am unable to congratulate the members on the financial success of the season, but in view of the serious depression wc are passing through, the club must foe accounted fortunate to be able to carry on when so many clubs are in extreme temporary difficulties,” remarked Mr D. McLeod, the president, at the annual meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club to-day. “The weather was mainly responsible for the loss during the season, the receipts from all sources being much below those of the previous year,” he stated. “The committee deemed it prudent to wipe off £lOOO depreciation, leaving a total deficiency of £2121. Although the overhead expenses were reduced considerably, without being unduly pessimistic, one could only say that the present racing outlook is anything but bright. It is somewhat alarming to note the number of horses taken to Australia. This is having a serious effect on the nominations of the various Dominion clubs, especially those with classic spring races. It has been decided to delete the All-Aged Stakes owing to the poor support. An application will be made for an extra day’s racing in December if a. permit is available.” —(P.A.)
