NAZIS AND COMMUNISTS IN CONFLICT. SERIOUS DISORDERS AT ESSEN. LONDON, July 4. “The Times’ 1 correspondent at Berlin says that the decree restoring freedom to political denominations was celebrated by a gigantic Communist rally. The Lustgarten, the space before the former Royal palaces, was ablaze with scarlet banners adorned with the hammer and sickle. Lorry loads of police were ready for disorder, but the vast crowd marched away quietly, shouting “Down with the Nazis.” Serious disorders occurred at the Red sporting festival at Essen, when the mob fired and stoned the police, killing a sergeant. The police returned the fire and killed 24 Communists. Nazi and Communist conflicts are also reported from Stuttgart and Eschweiler.
