ITALY’S STAND.
FRANCO-BRITISH PROPOSAL ACCEPTED. BUT CLEAN SLATE PREFERRED. SPECULATION AT LAUSANNE. (Received Tuesday, 7 p.m.) LAUSANNE July 5. The time has come for each to carry into effect regarding others the evangelical precept: ‘‘Forgive ns our debts as we forgive our debtors, ” is a passage in an Italian statement explaining that Signor Grandi (Foreign .Minister) visited Mr. Ramsay MacDonald yesterday to emphasise that while Italy is accepting the Franco-British proposal, nevertheless she favours a clean slate.
The statement has evoked considerable comment and is diversely interpreted as a bid for American sympathy or an encouragement of German intractability. It is even suggested that Italy has deserted her other former Allies.
