OBITUARY.

MRS MAGGIE COLE. An old identity passed away at the Palmerston North Hospital early on the morning of Tuesday March 31, in the person of Mrs Maggie Cole, relict of Mr. Dominic Cole, more familiarly known in Masterton as Harry. Both were well known and esteemed residents of the Horowhenua and, formerly the Wairrapa district. The deceased lady, who was aged 69, had been an invalid for the past ten years, and was taken to the hospital in January. She came from Cornwall, the country of her birth, as a young woman, being then Miss Netherton, and landed in the South Island from the sailing ship British Queen in February, 1883. The following year she was married in Christchurch, where she and. her hus band resided until 1889, removing then to Wairarapa. The late Mr. Cole had a carrying business for many years in .Masterton and was very popular, his genial personality being combined with an unfailing integrity. In his wife he had a true helpmate—one who led an active life, reared a large family, and did not hesitate to aid him in his business when occasion required it. They left Masterton in 19*12 and were engaged in farming at Pahiatua for a couple of years, after which they shifted to Levin and followed the same occupation at Gladstone Road. Subsequently they conducted a restaurant, and after that Mr. Cole was engaged in dealing and contracting. In 1925 Mr. Cole, had to enter the hospital at Otaki, and his illness proved fatal. The family are all living, and they comprise four sons and six daughters. The former, all resident in Lovin, are Daniel (married), Henry, Charles (married), and Roy. The daughters are Mrs Len Sayers and Mrs Louis Spackman, of Masterton, Mrs I. Lamb, of Te Aroha, Mrs W. La Roche, Mrs A. Ferris and Miss Louie Cole, of Levin. There are 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One grand-daugh-ter, with her two children, lives in Tasmania, she being Mrs Hanlon, of Ellendale.
