Nine members of Wairarapa Tramp ir.g Club who set out on Friday morning to traverse the Tararuas to Otaki, returned to Masterton on Saturday after encountering very heavy weather in the ranges. Late on Friday afternoon, the party reached what is normally a small stream below the Tauherenikau Hut, where it was intended to spend the night. The stream had swollen to a raging torrent which could not he crossed. The party returned to Wall’s Hut, near Woodside and spent the night there. A howling gale blew in the ranges all day on Friday and was accompanied by continu ous heavy rain. All the mountain streams were in heavy flood and the track itself was knee-deep in water in places.
