ABANDONMENT OF SESSIONAL INVESTIGATION.
RECESS INQUIRY PROBABLE.
(By Telegraph—“ The Ago” Special.) WELLINGTON, September 30. A special select committee was recently appointed by the Government to take evidence and report on the financial summary of railways under construction. This showed that all seven railways now in hand will be opened at a loss when completed, the estimate of aggregate losses being £737,000 annualTbe committee has appointed Mr. "• T-. Hogan, Independent member for Rangitikei, as its chairman, but it has been in communication with organisations wishing to give evidence stating that there is insufficient time this session to hear witnesses. Several progress leagues in the South Island and a number of individuals in the North Island have indicated their intention of presenting evidence and a Gisborne delegation was due early, next week to advocate the completion of the NapierWisborne line, on which the estimated annual loss is £28.3,000. Probably when the committee reports to the House some announcement regarding a recess investigation may be made by the Act-ing-Prime Minister.
