CARTERTON AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. (The “Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough. Council was held last evening, the Mayor Mr. W. Fisher presiding. The treasurer reported receipts on account of district fund account £982 8s 7d of which £7OO 3s 2d was on account of rates, and £359 on gasworks account. Accounts amounting to £893 10s 2d on District Fund, and £384 Ils 6d on Gasworks Account were passed for payment. The gas consumed for July 1930 was .540,100 cubic feet, of a net value of £253 8s 3d, as compared with £516,700 cubic feet, of a net value of £234 8s 9d for the corresponding month last year. The Works Committee reported having issued building permits for dwellings for Mrs S'. B. Hill in Wakelin Street and Mr. B. Sewell in Richmond. Road, and recommended that applications be called for the position of lorry driver etc. to the Borough; also that 15 tons of bitumen be procured for use during the coming season. A water service connected from the main fn Broadway is to be made to the residences of Messrs B. Smith and H. M. Catt.

The gas manager reported that he had disposed of the stock of coke outsi'aC the Borough and a good demand was in right One combination gas cooker had hem installed and a new service laid. The sanitary inspector reported the condition of the town to be satisfactory. It was decided to pay the Carterton Amateur Swimming Club commission on the sale of tickets made by the caretaker last season. An application from the residents of Seddon Street for a street light was not granted. It was decided to effect alterations to the Baths fence in order to improve the visibility of the railway line crossing at Pembroke Street. A request from the Wairarapa P. and A. Society for a holiday on People’s Day of the Show was referred to the Tradesmen’s Association.
