THE RACING WORLD.

NEWS, NOTES AND COMMENTS. Mr. Vallanee’s Llyn Du won the trial hurdles on the IfirSt day at • Christchurch and the same owner went very close to winning the National Steeples with -his promising young horse Corneroff. Aurora Borealis proved just too good for Mr. Vallanee’s horse, but as he is still a young horse he should have a great future. The locally owned and trained Royal Opera was one of the fancied ones for a race at Christchurch but he failed to get into the money. The racing Royal Opera has had should assist him in early spring events and he should not be long in getting on the winning list. Portray raced consistently at the National meeting but Mr Hume’s horse had to put up with second place on the first and last day. He should soon notch a win. Teri failed to gain a place, but he is credited with running a good race on the last day of the National meeting, so he may be looked for in his early spring engagements. Several Masterton horses are engag- 1 ed at. the Dannevirke meeting this week. Hynanna and Courageous are both in the chief event, while Shortly, Masterton, Pat’s Boy, Full Mark, Leyland and Sir Moment are candidates for other events. Hynanna should give a good account of himself in the Neaglo Handicap on Wednesday. With the recent racing the Hymestra horse has had, he will be one of the public fancies. Royal Opera, Count Palatine, Hynanna and Courageous are the only horses hailing from the Wairarapa included amongst the entries for the New Zealand Cup, to be run in November. A Wellington sporting writer states that W. Hawthorne is leaving Opaki for Trentham, but the publication of the news was the first Hawthorne had heard of it. It is reported that owner-trainer Burgess is returning home with-Athol-spear, Spearmiss, Werata and Ben Hur. Evidently Burgess’s team has not struck form in Sydney—as he failed to win a race.
