Presbyterian church services will be held on Sunday, August 31, at Tinmi at 11 a.m. .and at Langdale at 2.38-' pan. Mr. E, Long, of the Napier Y.M.C.A., will be the chief guest and speaker at the Optimist dub luncheon to-day. A man working at Mangamahoe was arrested yesterday by Sergt. T. H. Dyer and Constable B. Smith, of Masterton, and will appear before the Magistrate’s Court this morning to answer a very serious charge. On Thursday evening, under the auspices of the Wairarapa Small Holding Association, Mr. J. W. Whelan, Government Orchard' Instructorj will give an illustrated lecture on fruit tree diseases. The lecture will’ ibe held in Masterton Municipal Hall. At the meeting of the wnr A. on Monday next, the whole evening will ■be given to a reading of Ibsen’s play “The Doll’s House,” by members of the WXA. Play-Reading Circle. The reading will be under the direction of Miss Edna Jenkins and the cast will be: Nora, Miss Jenkins; Mrs Linde, Mrs S. J. Smith; Torvald Helmer, Mr. C. M. Bowden; Dr. Rank, Mr. J. Mulvey; Krogstad, Mr. S. V. Gooding. At a preliminary meeting held at Carterton for the purpose of forming a district committee under the auspices of the Wairarapa Progress League, it was decided that the Carterton Tradesmen’s Association be requested! to act as the foundation of a district committee. It is intended to incorporate representatives of localbodies and others.

While out rabbit shooting on Sunday a lad named Maurice Danka, aged' 15, was accidentally shot by a companion with a pea rifle, but fortunately no vital organs were affected, reportsa Press Association message from Palmerston North. By the afternoon train a party of twenty Napier Y.M.C.A. boys arrived in Masterton yesterday on a few days yisit. The boys are being billeted with various Masterton families. Last tnight the visitors attended a picture show, and to-day at 10 ajn. will play the local Y.M.C.A. boys at Rugby at Rugby Park. If the weather is fine a motor drive around the district is on the programme for this afternoon. In addition to outdoor games there will he indoor games and contests between the visitors and the local boys. Mr. E. Long, secretary of boys’ work, Y.M.C.A., is in charge of the (Napier party. A considerable amount of useful work was done by the working bee at the Wairarapa Aero Club's landing ground at South Rood on Saturday afternoon. Amongst those who assembled were Boy Scouts and Wolf Cubs under the Rev. E. M. McLevie (District Scoutmaster) and Miss Daisy Hubbard (District Cubmaster), a few Wairarapa High School boys, members of the staff of Messrs. C. E. Daniell Ltd., Mr. T. Elder and a number of committee and other members of the Aero dub. An extensive area was cleared of stones, though this work is not yet quite completed, and a considerable amount of work was done on the hangar. Two-thirds of the floor was cemented.

Action was brought by the Crown against the Inglewood Borough Council to determine the principal question whether a local rating authority could exercise its power of sale for recovery of overdue rates of land over which, the Crown held -a mortgage, states a New Plymouth Press Association telegram. The judgment of Mr. Justice Blair, who heard the case at the last sessions of the Supreme Court, goes in favour of the rating authority in holding that they have a right to exercise powers of sale, and that overdue rates are a first charge against the proceeds. Mr. C. H. Weston appeared for the Crown, and Mr. L. M. Moss for the Inglewood Borough.

The visit of the Maori Festival Party, which created such interest last year, when the Opera House was filled to overflowing, is to be repeated this year. The Rev. A. J. ’Seamer, who is directing the party, had intended not to use the party this year on account of the upset caused in mission arrangements thereby, but has consented Under pressure, and the party will be in Masterton Opera House on Thursday, September 4. This year the party has been strengthened in the vocal section by the addition of a talented native soprano from the Chatham Islands. Reports from the south indicate that the largest theatres and halls are being filled to capacity, and ’great enthusiasm created by the visit of the party.

A representative gathering of eom■mitteemen, parents and children assembled at Opaki School on Saturday afternoon to farewell the teacher in charge (Mrs C. M. Hocquard) and her assistant (Miss Whiteside) who have been transferred to other schools on account of a fall in the roll numbers at Opaki. On behalf of the children of the school, who are very sorry to lose their teachers, the ehairman of the School Committee (Mr. J. G. Wingate) made presentations to both teachers in appreciation of their kindness and hard work and the interest they had always taken in their pupils. The present to Mrs Hocquard was a Shelley afternoon tea set and Miss Whiteside was presented with a dressing table set. When the departing teachers had replied, they were heartily cheered by the children. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of the district. Mrs Hocquard, who has been at Opaki for nearly four years, is now appointed to Parkvale School. Miss Whiteside is to take over a school in the Braneepcth district.
