CASTAWAYS.
PARTY FOUND ON BIRD ISLAND. ELECT TO REMAIN THERE. HELP FROM PASSING SHIP. '(Received Tuesday, 9.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 5. Townsville advices state that the master of the steamer Taiping, from the East, discovered 35 castaways, including women and children, on Bird Island, 'BOO miles from Thursday Island. They had sheltered there for a month after being washed up in a tenton smack, and had lived on birds and fish. They were in need of fresh water which was given them by the Taiping. The castaways elected to remain on the island and were given food and other comforts. There was no sign of them when the Taiping passed the island on her return trip.
