MISS AMY JOHNSON.

RECEIVES ROUSING WELCOME AT CROYDON. ASSEMBLAGE OF NOTED WOMEN. BOUGH HOMEWARD FLIGHT FROM VIENNA. United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, August 4. Miss Amy Johnson arrived at Croydon Aerodrome shortly after 9 o’clock in the evening in the City of Glasgow, piloted by Captain Youell, from Vienna. The big machine battled with stiff winds and rainstorms throughout the journey, and was forced to refuel at Brussels, postponing the arrival nearly three hours. Seven light ’planes met the City of Glasgow a mile from the shore and escorted her to Croydon. The aerodrome was surrounded by thousands, who waited patiently to welcome the intrepid aviatrix. Thousands more lined the nine-mile route to London. On the landing ground was a platform on which were gathered 200 favoured persons, including Amy’s parents, her sisters Molly and Betty, and many relatives. The giant 'plane came down lightly and taxied slowly towards the platform. The door of the fuselage opened, and the slim figure of Amy, hatless, with her brown hair shining, stood there. For a second she waited breathless, amazed by the gigantic shout of welcome, and then leaped out and ran to meet her mother, who, with her father and sisters advancing, nearly smothered her with kisses. Lord Thomson, Air Minister, Miss Margaret Bondfield, Minister of Labour, Sir Sefton Brancker, Director of Civil Aviation, Sir Charles Wakefield, Mr. F. Montague, Under-Seerotary for Air, and a host of others, pressed forward to offer congratulations. The escorting cars contained Miss Winifred Brown, the King’s Cup winner, Miss Marjorie Foster, the King’s Prize winner, Miss Ivy Hawke, the Channel swimmer, Mrs. Victor Bruce, the motorist and Miss Diana Fishwiek, the golf champion.
