THE RUGBY GAME.

WAIRARAPA COMPETITIONS CONTINUED. MASTERTON PUT UP GOOD PERFORMANCE. GREYTOWN AND CARTEUTON HAVE WINS. The Wairarapa Eugby Union’s competition matches were continued on Saturday in fine, but cold weather. There were no surprises in the senior grade games, though Masterton went close to scoring their first win of the season. They were defeated by Bed Star by 5 points to 3. In a bright, fast game at Memorial Park Greytown accounted for Old Boys to the tune of 26 points to 6, while Gladstone went down to Carterton at Carterton by 19 points to 5. Taken on the whole, the form displayed in the senior games was the best for some considerable time, a fact greatly appreciated by Rugby patrons, who have been rather disappointed with the senior games lately. The Third Test match at Auckland was broadcast at Memorial Park on the Philco Radio by Mr. W. L. Joyce, Wairarapa representative for Chas. Begg and Co. The reception was firstclass and the large attendance of the public were able to follow the general trend of the game with ease. SENIOR RESULTS. Greytown 26 beat Old Boys 6. Red Star 5 beat Masterton 3. Carterton 19 beat Gladstone 5. JUNIOR. Masterton 8 beat Old Boys 3. Gladstone 15 beat Carterton 9. GREYTOWN—OLD BOYS. Better team work generally, and a marked superiority among the backs gave Greytown 'a win over Old Boys by 26 points to 6 in a match played at Memorial Park. Despite the rather substantial margin of points the game was fast and evenly contested and was marked by bright individual and concerted back play. Mill and Le Quesne played outstanding games for Old Boys, while Fuller and Stringfellow were the pick of the visitors’ /backs. Old Boys had the best of the initial exchanges and soon had Greytown penned on their line. A sweeping Greytown forward rush, however, took play to the White line, where, after a series of hot attacks, Parker crossed. Fuller failed with the kick.—Greytown 3/0. Mill put Old Boys on attack with a pretty dash, Fuller relieved and further good play by the Yellow pack culminated in Himona touching down. The kick failed.—6/0. Then Fuller came to light with a great run to score a good try in a handy position. He added the major points. —ll/0. Old Boys took a turn at attack and for -a time Greytown were hard put to keep their line intact. Fuller eventually relieved and the forwards carried on in a fine move, which resulted in Lepien crossing for an unconverted try. Half-time sounded with the score unchanged. Old Boys went to attack on resumption and Mill made a nice opening. Hardie, however, dropped a pass when {almost across. Whites kept up the pressure and in attempting to clear a Greytown player infringed. Clemett landed a fine goal.—l6/3. The Old Boys forwards were now going well, ■and shortly after a hot rush saw F. Smith cross. The kick failed.—l6/6. From then on Grey town, their rear guard combining well, dominated the game and quickly piled on ten points. Best crossed from a forward scramble and Fuller converted. —21/6. Just before time Parker broke away, handed to Stringfellow, who cut right through to score in a handy position. Fuller converted.—Greytown 26, Old Boys 6. STARS—MASTERTON. In a hard fast game played at Memorial Park Stars defeated Masterton by 5 points to 3. Stars had slightly the better of matters in the first spell, but honours were fairly even in the second session. Masterton had as much say in affaire as Stars, but were unable to drive home their efforts to a successful conclusion. Sometimes it was only strong, determined tackling that settled their movements. Both packs got right into the game; there were no beg pardons, and throughout there was a keen tussle for possession, in which Masterton stood up to their task well. In many of their games Masterton's howing ha not been as bad as perhaps the repeated wins against them have indicated. The material is in the team, and all that is needed is experience. At any rate the team, as a whole, seems to be going much better as the season advances. At half-time the score was 3 nil in Masterton's favour, C. Pickering scoring an unconverted try. In the second session At.tree crossed for Stars and Clarke converted, making the final score Stars 5, Masterton 3. CARTERTON—GLADSTONE. In a hard game, confined mostly to the Carterton defeated Gladstone at Carterton by 19 points to 5. Though they fielded only twelve men Gladstone put up a good fight, and, except for the closing stages of the game, more than held their own,
