PLUNKET SHIELD.

OTAGO NARROWLY DEFEATED BY WELLINGTON. COLLAPSE WITH VICTORY IN SIGHT. DUNEDIN, February 3. The Plunket Shield cricket match between Otago and Wellington was concluded on Carrisbrook Park to-day when the home side collapsed when in sight of victory. The weather was sunny and the wicket was in good order and the outfield as fast as it bad been throughout the match. Wellington had six wickets down for 122 in their second innings when play was resumed and their innings was brought to a close before lunch, the last wicket falling when the total was at 172. This left the Otago • side 258 to make to win. Five wickets had fallen in the home team's second strike for 180 and the position looked rosy for a win with only 78 runs to win, and five wickets yet to fall, but Cavanagh’s downfall was only a preface to disaster. The colt had played a good innings for 87 but the Otago captain, Alloo, went out a few minutes after him and the remaining four wickets fell before 200 was reached. The innings closed for 193. Baker, Henderson and Hollings were the most effective bowlers, the first-named taking 5 wickets for 50, the second 3 for 48, and the last-named two for 18. Shepherd and Cavanagh alone made a creditable showing in the second innings for the home side. Following are details:— WELLINGTON. First Innings 283 Second Innings.
