PLAY IN THE FOURSOMES. ADELAIDE, August 21. In the golf foursomes Horton’s play in partnership with Hattersley was effective. The young Sydney player also did well, though his iron shots vnere expensive Morpetn’s best was a tee shot to the seventh, 161 yards, which finished six inches from the pin. The pair’s card showed 78 out and in. ‘Smith and Morrison’s scores were 80 and 76. The leading pairs arc Whitton and Winser and Bulte and Fowler, 154 each. There was ideal weather for the first qualifying round of the open golf championship to-day. There are eightythree competitors. The holder of the title Fred Popplcwell, took 86 on the morning rouhd. A large gallery followed Ivo Whitton and Rufus Stewart, whose scores were 74/77 respectively, but the New Zealander, Morpeth, took pride of place with W. Corry, with 73. Morpeth played beautifully, finishing as strong as a lion with a brace of fours, one of which came at the five-hundred yards seventeenth hole by a clear straight drive, a number one iron and two putts. After this, rhe other four was easy. His card read 36/37. W. Corry also returned with seventy-three. Others were: Ed.
