DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC.
HAMILTON CORONER’S COMMENTS. HAMILTON, July 3. The Coroner, Mr. F. W. Platts, giving his verdict this morning in the inquest regarding the death of Thomas William Atkinson (19) under an anaesthetic at the Waikato Hospital after a nasal operations, said that the usual steps to promote respiration were taken promptly when the patient’s collapse was noticed by the hospital sister, but it was unfortunate that both nurses were out of the ward when the collapse began. This experience indicated that in similar cases a' nurse should be detailed for exclusive attention to a patient while under an anaesthetic. This course was now followed only when the surgeon or superintendent so directed. The cause of death was difficult to explain with certainty. The medical evidence was that an enlarged thymus rendered the patient especially susceptible to the action of an anaesthetic and the shock of an operation, and such a condition was not discoverable by external examination.
A verdict was given accordingly, and the Coroner conveyed his sympathy to the relatives of the deceased. —(P.A.)
