VOLCANO ERUPTS.

ISLAND OF AMBRYM ACTIVE. ALL INHABITANTS LEAVE. MISSION STATION SITE. SUVA, July 3. Resident-Commissioner Joy, of the New Hebrides, reports that the big volcano on the island of Ambrym is again active. From 300 to 400 natives have left the Island and taken refuge on the island of Malekula, 30 miles distant. The Resident Commissioner is arranging for the provisioning of the refugees. Advices received in Sydney as to the volcanic eruption on Ambrym Island state that the island was blown up on Friday night. The mission stations of Craig’s Cove and Balap were completely destroyed. Ambrym is one of the larger islands of the Hebrides group, and is about sixty miles in circumference. The Presbyterian Mission at Craig Cove nearby is really a New Zealand station working with the Presbyterian Church of Victoria. Thefe would be about ten whites at Ambrym Station at the time of the eruption. The volcano had been unnaturally quiet for a long time past.
