SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. (“The Age" Special.) A senior basketball club has been. 1 formed at Carterton. The following officers were elected: Patroness, Miss White; president, Miss A. M. Brown; vice-presidents, Misses D. Armstrong and G. Aplin; secretary, Miss A. James; treasurer, Miss Ashton; committee, Missea WJiite, Brown, Armstrong, Aplin, James, F. Ashton, M. Ashton and R. Jones; captain, Miss F. Ashton; vicecaptain, Miss D. Maitland. It was <le»cided that membership be open to newcomers and that practice be held each Saturday at the Carterton School grounds. The subscription was filed at 35., and the colours blue and red. It was decided to affiliate with the Wairarapa Basketball Association. Personal. Mr. Irvine Hart, who leaves for Nelson to-day, was farewelled by the Carterton Football Club and Amateur Athletic Club on Tuesday evening, and presented with tokens of esteem. From the Football Club he received a travelling rug and from the Athletic Club a leather attache case. In St. Mark's Parish Hall, Carterton, on Tuesday evening, Miss Rita Masson was tendered a parcel evening in honour of her approaching marriage, the function being organised by the Young Women’s Social Club. There was a large attendance, and an enjoyable time was spent with music, songs and dancing. During the proceedings, the Rev. W. Raine called upon the guest of the evening to open the many gift parcels, which she did amid applause. Mr N. Goodin responded on behalf of Miss Masson, thanking all for their kindness. Messrs Burns and Watson, inspectors, visited the Carterton District High School yesterday. Rifle Shooting. The Carterton Miniature Rifle Club has decided to open the season on Tuesday evening next.

GREYTOWN. (“The Age” Special.) A strong company, numbering over 30 members, has been formed in Greytown at the instigation of Miss O. Wolters, Carterton, District Commissioner of the Girl Guide movement. Mrs G. R. Jury has been appointed captain, and Miss E. Tate lieutenant. The company comprises five patrols and an excellent start has already been made. A meeting of the Company Committee was held on Tuesday, there being present: Mrs. W. A. Tate (president) in the chair, Miss O. Wolters (Carterton), Mesdames R. H. Anker, Berney, A. M. Maigh, A. H. Humphrey, G. R. Jury, Miss E. Tate and Mrs. J. F. Thompson. Apologies were received from Mesdames R. G. Vile, H. G. Nightingale, W. G'. K. Wiggins and J. Barnard. Mrs. J. F. Thompson was appointed secretary and treasurer, and Mesdames Tate and Berney delegates to the District Committee. The Company Committee is to be addressed by Miss Dalton '(England) who is in New Zealand, to further the Guide movement, on Tuesday next. Croquet Club. The Grey town Croquet Club is engaged in playing off the final club games for the season. The club has had a successful year and the beauty of the lawns and surroundings has been favourably remarked upon by many visitors to the Memorial Park. Fishing and Shooting. Fishermen on the Dake report good catches recently and state that even better catches could be -obtained if noisy motor boats did not disturb the quiet reaches. Duck shooters in the district are already busy making preparations for the opening of the season. Decoys are being resurrected, guns overhauled and arrangements made with lakeside owners for shooting permits. Main Highway. The main street is receiving a coating of tar while the weather is favourable. This roadway, first laid down at a very cheap cost by the Greytown Borough Council some 15 years ago, has stood up remark*? , <*y to the large body of Wai me ncAv carried and hardly at the outset. The suggestion i® that the device be placed in the river and that when the water reaches a certain height an alarm bell installed in the adjoining house of the Moroa Water Race Committee's overseer will give warning of impending flood. The Featherston County Council is being asked to assist in the matter by allowing the water race overseer, on receiving the -warning to telephone the Telephone Exchange operator, so that warning might be given to farmers affected.
