SAFELY BACK.
BYRD AND FRIENDS RETURN FROM MOUNTAINS. TIMELY SPELL OF GOOD WEATHER. ADVENTURERS GET WARM WELCOME. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) ' (By Russell Owen. Special to “New York Times.'’) BAY OF WHALES, March 23. Commander Byrd flew back from 1 the mountains to-day. After two days’ waiting for the wind to go down, the sky cleared this morning, with a cold sun shining and the thermometer at 22 below zero. The ’plane took off and in less than three hours was back again. Evdtyone was overjoyed to see Byrd step out of the cabin in which he and his companions, Gould, June and Hanson had been packed so tightly that they were almost spilling over the pilot, Dean Smith. It was a happy end to an episode which might have had disastrous consequences, but was overcome by the efficient working of the entire organisation. Byrd, Gould and Hanson were surrounded by everyone in camp, anxious' to know all about the ice, where the winds blows a hundred and fifty miles an hour. All were well,' despite the severe cold. The nights were spent in sleeping bags, for the temperature was below zero.
