MESSITER MURDER.

CASE STILL A MYSTERY. CORONER REFLECTS ON POLICE. LONDON, March 17. The jury in the Messiter inquiry were unanimous in finding a verdict of murder against a person or persons unknown. The Coroner, summing up, said that the witness Pod-more’s statement was a mass of inconsistencies regarding the dates and circumstances. The jury must use its discretion as to what credence was to be placed on the alleged conversations between Podmore and another prisoner. He proceeded to say that it was an unhappy circumstance that the authorities had not prosecuted anyone in connection with the murder. The police counsel objected to the statement, saying he desired to protest against the Coroner■’s observations. The Coroner’s statement was forthwith • communicated to the Director of Public Prosecutions.—(Australian Press Association.) (Scotland Yard has been investigating since the beginning of the year the murder of Vivian Messiter, aged 55, the Southampton manager of an American oil company, whose body was found in a private garage in Southampton ten weeks after Messiter’s disappearance. The case apparently remains a mystery.)
