Accounts amounting to £637'14,. 15s 6d were passed for payment. < I The Wairarapa South County Council a J wrote asking if the council, as one of I the contributing bodiicis, was favourable to having two coats of paint put on the Mhtarawa Bridge. The clerk was j instructed to reply that the council; was of opinion that the bridge was too < eld to spend money on. i | Mr F. G. Wray wrote regarding the I Cape River Road for which he had contracted at £2O. Owing to heavy rains bringing down slips the work took longer to complete than anticipated, the amount of material moved being over 400 yards. He therefore apoeailed to the council fdr considcraItion. .It was decided to take no action. A further letter was received from *Mt A. K. Hansen about a drain in the I> vicinity of the Morison’s Bush Hotel, which, he stated, was causing .soma of his land to be covered with, water at times, 10 to 22 acres being affected. 'lt was resolved that the whole council meet end. inspect on Thursday, March 28. Mr E. B. Burch, Greytown, wrote stating that he was building a house on the main road to Featherston ana would require a culvert to give access. Permission was given to put in a culvert to the satisfaction of the overseer. I A letter was received from Mr W. O. ■ Hewitson, Martinborough, asking if arrangements could be made .with the ' inspector to weignt the writer’s two ' lorries. It was resolved that the in- i spcctor be asked to visit the district ] and weight all the lorries there. < Mr T. C. Udy, Tauhorenikau Valley,

wrote giving a statement of monies spent by him on the road to his property, which amounted to £l9 17s 6d, besides the work done by himself. This was supposed to be an offset against the rates due by him. It was agreed , to use the expenditure as a set-oil against his rates. Mr W. E. Bidwill, ‘* Rototawai, ’' ■ wrote offering to give three acres of ■ land for a recreation ground at Kahutasra, and if the council was willing to ! accept same, instead of trustees, the s transfer would, bo made accordingly, as ( the survey has already been made. The* matter was referred to £he county soli-l] eitor. The Greytown Borough Council wrote? asking for co-operation in having Kuratawhiti Street, to be declared a main or highway. The letter was deceived. J. Crawford, ranger for the West ern Bidings, reported having dealt with 45 cattle and. 5 horses during the month. W. Smith, ranger for the Eastern Ridings, dealt with 23 cattle and 3 horses in the same period. The crusher foreman reported having crushed 2461 yards of metal at a cost of 3s 2d per yard.

It was decided to call tenders for deepening the Battensea drain in accordance with the suggestions made by the Lanas Board. It was resolved to apply for the ofl--1 owing roads to be deelred subsidiry Highways: Awhea, Hinakura, No. 1 Line, South Featherston Road, and from Pirmoa to Lake Ferry..

ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer reported that the plans were ready now, and tenders could be called for the work in connection a the Whakawcra Creek improvement scheme. The Oporoua Bridge had been inspected and it was. found that the timber sheathing was defective. On account of the scour and the greater amount of water to be dealt with now, he would, suggest a new bridge. The contractor for the Lake Domain. Road was making good headway and a progress payment of £54 had been certified to. The Otakura Bridge would be finished in a few days, after which the bridge gang would make a start on the Buamahanga Overflow Bridge. Borings Lave been taken fon the Torn Bridges and plans., would shortly be submitted to the Public Works Depa-it-ment for approval. Of the bitumen work on the Greytown-Tauherenikau highway, one mile and 10 chains has been completed and the whole of the two miles authorised should be completed shortly.

GENERAL BUSINESS As it was found unsatisfactory to have the crusher ’phone on a party line, it was decided to apply for a separate line. It was decided to call fresh tenders for the additions and alterations to the Pirinoa workman’s cottage and that a special meeting be held on March 28, to deal with the matter of raising a loan for workers dwellings. It was resolved to observe the usual holidays at Easter. The amount of £4l Is arrears in rates was written off by resolution. Councillor Bidwill was asked to make inquiries about a telephone for the workman’s cottage at Kahutara and report to the next meeting. The overseer was instructed to attend to a culvert on the Tawaha Road. SPECIAL MEETTING At the conclusion of the ordinary business a -special meeting was held, I when a special order was made declaring the Pukio Drainage Area District as per plan.
