THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. SATURDAY, MARCH 16, 1929. ADORNING THE TOWN

In its annual report, which appears in another column to-day, the Beautifying .Society tells of n year ef steady activity with which it baa good, reason to be satisfied. Moat of us are familiar with the lines on which the society is working, in friendly co-operation with the Borough Council, to make this town a pleasanter and prettier' place to live in. The fine work that the so ciety is doing certainly .should be val ued and appreciated by the people of Masterton, and convincing evidence that appreciation is not lacking is to ibfound in the fact- hat the proceed: of two carnivals heli during the year made a net addition of over £7OO to [the society’s funds. Splendid work is being done in the streets, of which another sixty-five chains were planted during the year, in the parks and elsewhere. Although a great deal has nl ready been- accomplished, it seems like !y to be a very long time before thia capable band of enthusiasm finds’ itself in the position of having to sigh for new worlds to conquer. ■ There is no end to the enterprise of beautifying a town. In spite of all that has been done. Masterton etill affords almost indefinite scope for continued enterprise on similar lines. Work is proceeding steadily in the Bark, but there are considerable areas yet untouched, amongst them the land between the Bridges which the society helped the Borough Council to add to the Park. Here there is a most promising field for beautifying enterprise when the question of Hood protection has been dealt witn in a satisfactory way. Tn what the society has already accomplished in its friendly association with the BoroUgh Council, there is a satisfactory assurance that this and oth-.r opportunities will be turned admirably to account as time goes. on. The people of Masterton cannot better study and advance (heir own interests as a ecmmunity than by giving liberal and whole-hearted support to their Beautifying Society. PARK LIGHTING CARNIVAL

- _ Given such weather as has been on- 1 ■joyed lately, there should be no doubt (about tihe success of the carnival to be, fiield in the Park to-day to raise funds’ to pay off part of the cost of the fine' teleetric lighting system which has' [made evening sports meetings and other. l (gatherings possible. These gatherings' .seem likely to win increasing popularity and the public should be very willing to rally to the support of the eomSmittee which took the initiative in installing the lighting scheme. Although there have been quite a number of [open-air gatherings in the Park this [season, to-day’s carnival has its own special attractions, including the sevon-ii-side tournament which heralds the [opening of another Rugby season and a Fire Brigade demonstration. The latter is expected to be a highly spectacujlar event of its kind. Other novelty attractions promise to provide plenty |Of good entertainment. The publie iu the circumstances should be very willing to give tho liberal support to which the Park Lighting Committee is so well 'entitled. 1

PHYSICAL EDUCATION As may be seen from a news item to- - day, the committee set up some time >ago to go into the question of retaining the services of a fully qualified phyisiI cal instructor in Mastertoll has now carried the project to an advanced stage. An applicant for the position who is considered suitable has been • selected, and it only remains to ascertain whether schools and other insti tutions are prepared to co-operate with the YMCA, iu employing the instructor and finding part of his salary. The .proposals now put forward obviously are entitled to serious and careful consideration. Physical education carried on by a competent instructor is recognised to be of great value and importance, and it appears that the schools and other institutions now being approached need incur individually only a small liability in ordpr to secure , their share of tho benefits thus offereel,
