"Davy Jones” was not a. real perron, but, according to the superstition of old sailors, the spirit who presided ©ver the spirits of the deep. Joncts i® a corruption of Jonah, the prophet who was thrown overboard, and Davy, short for David, was added as a fitting Christian name.
