NANKING SETTLEMENT.
PROVISIONS SIMILAR TO SINOAMERIGAN AGREEMENT. APOLOGY FOR OUTRAGES. (Received Monday, 11.45 p.m.) SHANGHAI, August 13. Th© Nanking (Settlement takes the form of an exchange of Notes between Dr. Wang and Sir Sidney Barton. The provisions are similar to the (SinoAmerican settlement. The Nanking Government apologises for the outrages and undertakes to compensate Britons for all losses sustained. At the same time, Dr. Wang suggests that Britain should apologise for the gunboat barrage at Soeony Hill. Sir Sidney Barten, replying, states that the action was necessary to protect British lives, and expresses regret that such action should have, been necessitated.
