THE RACING WORLD.

NEWS, NOTES & COMMENTS Thq Grand National meeting will open, at Riccarton to-morrow when the big steeples and the Winter Cup will bo the chief attractions. The big hurdle event will be decided on Thursday next. Only nine have paid up for the Steeplechase but the five at the top of the handicap should provide an interesting contest. Twenty have paid tfp for the Winter Cup and the field will provide a fine puzzle for backers. Paitonu is probably the most notable non-acceptor. Quite half the runners in the Winter Cup will carry good support and probably First Sight and Royal iSaxou will have most support from the southern punters. Black. Mint, Kaiti, Bisox and Panther will no doubt be the most sought after by those who arc selecting one of the North Island contingent to win. Masterton sportsmen will no doubt pin their faith to Mr. Vallance’.s pair of hurdlers. Rod Fuchsia and Peneus, [in the big Hurdles on Thursday. Red Fuchsia should have a great show. Nukumai and! Gaze will most likcjy bo ( the favourites with the public and with Beau Cavalier and Red Fuchsia, it should be a fine race. | Kalos is an acceptor for the Winter Cup. The locally-owned chestnut ran i third against a fair field of hacks recently, but this form is not good enough for a Winter Cup. Peneus landed the hurdles at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meetigg -re* cently for Mr Vallanae, Lilt it is doubtful whether he can be seriously considered for a race like the Grand National. Chelone has gone down to take his place in the Winter Cup field and is a likely lightweight to trouble some of them. Word comes from Sydney that Hynanna has been, well supported by his connections to win the Caulfield Cup. A win for. Mr. Kemball’s good horse would be well received here. Trainer Daly can be relied on to see that Hynanna gets every attention. Thurnbell, who accompanied Hynanna to Australia, should not return without a win. He is a solid s.:.rt and has shown much improvement. It is reported that the thoroughbred sire Greyspear has been disposed of to a Dannevirke syndicate. The news that Greyspear had left came as a surprise to quite a number of local breeders.
