SHIELD RUGBY

WAIRARAPA DEFEAT BUSH BY BIG MARGIN.

A DAY OF RAPID SCORING. RATHER RAGGED GAME. The Wairarapa Rugby representatives successfully defended the Ranfurly Shield against Bush Districts on Saturday, running up the tig score of 57 points to 11. The first spell was ragged, but the second, although little more than a continuous scoring movement by Wairarapa, gave rise to rather brighter play. Cundy missed only three kicks at goal throughout the game. He converted nine tries and kicked two penalty goals. ■Early in the game the Bush forwards set out on a series of rushes which were stemmed by counter-attacking on the part of the Wairarapa backs. The first try of the match was registered in Wairarapa’s favour, when Cooke, secured from a lino-out and! kicked across to Yates. The latter immediately inpassed to Stringfellow, who, after making a nice opening, passed -back to Yates who crossed at the corner. Cundy’s kick was charged down. Five minute® later Martin Parker kicked through from a scrum and picked up to side-step B. Udy, the Bush full-back, and score well out. Cundy narrowly missed' with the kick. The play which followed was not of a very spectacular nature-, until Bush -broke away in a loose forward 1 rush which ended in Harris, the -centre three-quarter scoring, after following up hard- behind his forwards. B. Udy goaled with a splendid l kick. Enthused by their success, the Bush forwards maintained' the loose tactics, and after a few minute® of kicking up and- down field, broke away for Bartosh to cross, and establish a lead for -Bush. B. Udy missed the goal. Bush, 8; Wairarapa, 6. Parker was responsible for Wairarapa’s next break-through, in which Cundy was given an easy chance to put a penalty kick over but the ball went wide. After more forward play by Bush, the ball came back into the visitors’ area, where- another free kick was awarded in Wairarapa’s favour. This time Cundy goaled. Wairarapa, 9; Bush, 8. Before three minutes had elapsed another free kick was ordered, which Cundy treated- with similar result. Wairarapa 12, -Bush 8. Again from the efforts of the Bush forwards, the ball was transferred- to the Wairarapa area, but the backs failed to make use of the chances' they got. Parker dashed through from the end, of a line-out to intercept Humphry’s pass to Biddle, and run through with Cooke in support. At the right moment he delivered to the wizard, who- had' a straight run to the posts. Cundy goaled. The Bush forwards continued to work hard, but the Wairaarpa backs always turned, the tables. Half-time was sounded after an enterprising effort -by Hart along the side-line.

The second- spell opened with a strong sun against the visitors. Almost immediately after the kick-off, Bush were awarded a free kick which -B. Udy missed. Cooke, gathering in, kicked: down the line to the Bush 25. Tho Red and Black vanguard had the better of the line-out and transferred play to the -Shield-holders’ territory. At this stage both sets of backs began to put finish on their movements, and- the game became more interesting. Roach fielded a high kick nicely and sent away Cundy, who passed to Stringfellow. The latter booted through, Udy missed, and the ball bouncing nicely for tho Wairarapa centre, was gathered in and grounded under the posts. Cundy goaled. Wairarapa 22, 'Bush 8. Subsequently the Wairarapa forwards dominated play and for a good while held a decisive advantage. Q. .-Donald, M. Parker, N. McGregor and M. Willoughby were seen in a number of good rushes. From well inside the visitors’ area, Hart picked up at the feet of tho opposite pack and dived over for Cundy to goal. Wairarapa 27. Bush 8. The ball went up to- the Wairara-pa 25 after the kick-off, where Reid 1 secured 1 and started a spectacular -back run. The ball was passed to Cooke; then Hart, Stringfellow, Cundy and Yates handled in turn, the latter scoring. Cundy goaled. Wairarapa 32, Bush 8. The next points for the local team were registered by Parker after repeated attempts to wriggle across from a series of line-outs and scrums on the Bush line. Cundy goaled. Wairarapa 37, Bush S. Bartosh led the visiting forwards away in a .loose run, secured, and then Mahoney and Moynahan hand-led, to -be held up by the Wairarapa forwards- in the latters’ 25 for a fewseconds. Mahoney again secured and passed to Harris, who scored his second try for Bush while the home team practically stood and looked on Udy failed to convert. Bush .11, Wairarapa 37. Hart picked up in midfield and 1 passed to Fairbrother. Parker was next to secure. He made a grand opening and transferred to Hart. Reid kicked! his pass on, secured, and ran round behind the posts to score. Cundy goaled. 'Wairarapa 42, Bush 11. McGregor subsequently secured and passed to Mick Willoughby, who in-passed to McGregor for another try to bo registered in Wairarapa’s favour. Cundy goaled. Wairarapa 47, Bush 11. The- visitors held the- ball in Wairarapa’s area for a short space, but Cooke finally relieved. A Wairarapa back ran followed, but Stringfellow upset the movement by hanging on too long. The backs, however, continued to attack. Hart secured from a serum, passed: to Parker, to Cundy, to -Cooke, who- scored. Cundy goaled. Wairarapa 52, 'Bush 11. Quentin Donald secured on the Bush 25 line and fended several opponents off to pass to Mick Willoughby, who -scored his maiden try in Shield games. Cundy goaled. Wairarapa 57, Bush 11. Mr. H. J. McKenzie refereed.

MARLBOROUGH BEATEN.

MATCH AGAINST WANGANUI. WANGANUI, August 11. The Wanganui Rugby representatives defeated the Marlborough touring team here to-day by 19 to 13. Tho home team was changed a good 'deal from that which defeated Mann-whcnua on Saturday last, owing to some of the players being unavailable. Despite the alterations, Wanganui played! well, especially in the first spell. Their backs were superior to the- visitors. The Marlborough forwards were better on tho day, but failed at hooking. Their footwork was good but in the loose Wanganui were the better side. In the

second spell Wanganui -were a trifle lifeless and when Marlborough played up and the scores become Wanganui 14, Marlborough 13, the side woke up- and scored another try, which was converted. For the winners tries were scored by McLean (2), Stewart, Shanley, and Tilley. Tilly converted 1 one and Vangioni another. Washington kicked a penalty for the visitors. A GRIM STRUGGLE.

TARANAKI DEFEAT HAWKE’S BAY. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 11. By five to three, the Taranaki representatives defeated Hawke's Bay (before an attendance of six thousand. It was a poor dis/play of Rugby. Hawke’s Bay should have won, having the territorial advantage througout, but they were unable to finish off their movements. There was, only the conversion of a try the scores. The scrummaging was the worst seen this season. On only one occasion did the scrum pack properly. Usually Bay got the ball but could not make much use of it, the passing movements always 'breaking down. The Taranaki tackling was deplorable and that of the Bay little better. The first half was dull and ended without a score. Early in the second half, from scrambling play in the Taranaki 25, a Bay player took the ball, apparently offside, anjl passed to Dennis, who dashed over near the corner. Yates’s kick failed. Then the first real football of the match commenced, to be continued at a torrid pace to the end. Taranaki made a lightning attack and almost scored, the last man to handle being pushed out near thA corner. Bay woke up too, and put even more sting into their work than did the now thoroughly serious homie team. It became a desperate struggle in which no quarter was given. W. Hohaia scored a spectacular try for Taranaki. He secured an over-run pass at half-way, tore himself free from Huxtable’s tackle and raced down the side-line, evading several Bay men, to score a try that brought tho crowd to its feet. Some thought he had run out. Collins added a magnificent gaol. From then on both sides fought a grim struggle, but though Bay usually had the advantage, they could not score. On one occasion Donnes was almost over, but was pushed out at the corner flag. -(P.A.)
