GERMAN ELECTIONS
SWING TO LEFT BEWAILED BY NATIONALISTS. THREE MILLION COMMUNIST VOTERS. » GRAND COALITION SUGGESTED. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. (Received Tuesday, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 22. Berlin messages report that it is stated semi-officially that the Cabinet intends to postpone its resignation until the Reichstag meets, about June 12. The Nationalists are aghast at the debacle and are lamenting bourgeois disunion. It is realised that the elections represent a pronounced swing to the Left, but there is equal disunity among the Left parties, the Labourites and Communists being sworn enemies of the Socialist “traitors.” The increase in the Communist vote is most disquieting, 3,200,000 electors proclaiming their obedience to Moscow. The “Morning Post’s’’Berlin correspondent states that it is indeed fortunate that the Socialists are not strong enough to form a coalition without the People’s Party, as they might have been unable to resist the replacement of Dr. Stresomann. The only possible majority seems to- be a grand Coalition consisting of the People’s Party, Centre, Democrats and Socialists.—(Australian Press Association.) MONARCHISM FADING. LONDON, May 21. The ’ • Daily Mail, ” in a leader on the result of the German elections, says that it distinctly favours peace, as the advocates of a war of revenge .were numerously defeated. The strongest party will be the Socialists of the German variety, who are much less extreme than the British. The most important feature is the fading of the Hohenzollerns. Germany is definitely turning from Monarchism to Republicanism.—(Australian Press Association. —United Service.)
