FORTNIGHTLY SITTING IN MASTERTON. CRUELTY TO A HORSE. Mr. S. L. P. S.M., presided over the fortnightly sittings of the Magistrate’s Court in Masterton on 'l’hursday. George Fisher, for ill-treating a horse by working it while it was suffering from sore shoulders, pleaded guilty and was,fined £2 and 10s. costs. Sergeant Dyer said that he and Constable Johnson visited a paddock at the foot of Renall Street and there saw Fisher working a team of horses. They saw one horse suffering with a sore 4-in. by 3-in. on the left shoulder, and also another sore on the right shoulder. Both sores were raw, and the horse was not in a fit state to be worked. Fisher said that Reid, the owner, knew that the horse had a sore shoulder, but he had been instructed to work it. Ho said they had been treating the horse’s sores. The sack and collar produced showed marks from the sores. The horse was also in a very poor condition. John Henry Reid, the owner, was charged with permitting the horse to be worked while it was suffering from sore shoulders, and was fined £3 and 10s. costs. Defendant said that the horse was a bony one, and rather subject' 1 to sore shoulders. The sore had been treated by defendant. Defendant said the sores were not as large as stated by the sergeant. The instructions on the remedy used said that the horse should be worked while undergoing treatment. That made the cure more permanent when the sore did heal. BREACHES OF LICENSING LAWS. Adrian Walton Wilkins, licensee of th e Mori son ■’s Bush Hotel, was charged with selling liquor to Edward Flood and John Somers at a time when the hotel should be closed. Hamilton Millen, who served the liquor, was charged with supplying the liquor to Flood and Somers. Mr. B. H. Turton, who appeared for defendants, said the offence was committed on a night when a dance was being held at Morison’s Bush. Counsel asked that the license bo not endorsed, as a sale was pending. was fined £5 and 10s - costs, and Millen £lO and costs. The Magistrate said he would not endorse the hotel license.
