AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING AT CARTERTON. EASTER SATURDAY PROGRAMME. The Country Club Championships tQ be held at Carterton on Saturday next promise to be the best sports meeting held in the Wairarapa. Entries constitute a record both in numbers and in the quality of the competitors. In the cycling events, our New Zealand and Australasian record holder, T. Oakley, will meet notable opponents, amongst them C. Sutton, of -Napier, who has beaten Standen, the Australian crack cyclist; M. Donald and J. Powell, of Palmerston North; A. and W. Grant, of Dannevirke; and Robinson, Christensen and Foote, of 'Wellington.
W. J. Lankey, the New Zealand and Australasian champion, will compete in the walking events. He will be seen in action at night in the mile champion- * ship. Keen contests are to be expected in the sprint championships, for MUc? there are sixteen entries, amongst them those of Strange and Weston, Manawatu champions, L. Eddy, of Napie-, and E. Law, of Dannevirke. The distance races have also attracted good entries. Five from Palmerston North, three from Carterton, four from Masterton, three from Eketahuna. and one. each from Napier and Dannevirke will be the array of colours in the, mile championship. Of the ent’.a’jts for the 880 yards championship, Scotney cf the Kia Toa Club, Palmerston North, Wakcr and Hack, Cartertpn, and Campbell and Gully, of Masterton, i 1! have performances equal to statdard times.’ There are twelve entrants in the three miles championship, and it will be interesting to see how the Wairarapa l&d, Basil Blatchford, shapes against hia formidable opponents. Amongst events of special interest ia the evening, will be the thre<- ladies* championships. Miss Hoyle, of Napier will compete against local entrants. A silk sash will be awarded to the lady gain*ng most points in the three championship events. Programmes both for the afternoon and evening scissions are well filled, and the meeting promises at all stages to be thoroughly interesting -ini enjoyable. A bus to convey members of the Masterton team to Carterton will leave the Post Office at noon on Saturday.
