STEER RIDING.
DELETED FROM SHOW EVENTS. A MEMBER’S PROTEST. As the result of protests by the Masterton A. and P. Associatioii decided to delete the buck-jumping; contests from its show programme and replaced it with steer riding. This event also has met with disapproval and the association decided to delete it also, but to give it a trial at the! annual horse sports. A letter was received at yesterday’st meeting from Mr. David Smith, a past president, who considered that the majority of the public were not interested in these sort of wild cat schemes and he did not feel inclined to givol special prizes to the show if the association adopted principles bordering ori cruelty to animals. Mr. T. V. Caverhill, marshal of tho Light Horse Committee, which supervises the ring competitions, said he had given the matter a lot of thought and had discussed it with many people and now recommended that the steer ridinhj be given a trial at the horse sports aV the end of January, before the show, to see if it was a success. They didi not want to hurt the feelings of any members, nor was it intended to stagA any events which could be regarded as cruel to the animals. The meeting decided to delete tho steer riding from the show ring competitions.
