WAR IN CHINA

MAJOR VICTORY CLAIMED BY NATIONALISTS. HEAVY CAPTURES REPORTED. A SWEEPING ADVANCE. (Received Wednesday, 7.45 p.m.) SHANGHAI, November 8. The Nationalists claim a major victory in Liuho, Honan. Following on five days’ fighting, Feng Yu-Hsiang reports the capture of four armoured trains, with twenty thousand prisoners, forty-five cannon, a hundred trench mortars and a similar number of machine guns. He also states that he has reached within three miles outside of Hsuchowfu, an important strategic railway centre, and avers that he will sweep Shantung clear of the Northerners within a fortnight. The report is of purely Nationalist origin, but in the absence of Northern denials it probably is true.—(Sydney “Sun.”)
