FERRY DISASTER.
INQUEST ON VICTIMS OPENS. AN ADJOURNMENT. (Received Wednesday, 8.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 9. The inquest on the victims of the ferry disaster opened to-day, but was adjourned till Tuesday next in order to allow the police to make further inquiries and perhaps recover more bodies.—(P.A.). COMBINED. INQUIRY. SYDNEY, November 9. The Attorney-General announced that ; as the result of co-operation between the State and Federal Governments, Mr. Justice Campbell, of the Supreme Court, had been appointed to presided over the inquiry into the Ta-hiti-Greycliffe collision which is opening to-day. It has been arranged that tho chief and second officers of the Tahiti will return from Wellington by the Maunganui, arriving on Tuesday.— (P.A.). •• (Received Wednesday, 11.55 p.m.). The combined State and Federal en- 1 quiry into the ferry disaster opened before Mr. Justice Campbell, but adjourned until Wednesday next, w>thout hearing evidence, to allow counsel for the different interested parties to prepare their cases.—(P.A.). DISASTER DESCRIBED. (Received Wednesday, 11.55 p.ia.) SYDNEY, November 9. At the inquest into the ferry disaster, Dr. Palmer, Government Medical Officer, said that in his opinion drowning was the cause of almost every death. Ex-Debective Cornyn, who was a passenger on another ferry steamer, from which he witnessed the accident, said that when he first sighted the Greycliffe, sb® about, four lengths ahead of the Tahiti and appeared to be bearing in towards the larger ship. The Greycliffe appeared to be drawn in towards the Tahiti, although the ferry apparently had net altered her course. Then he heard one short blast from the Tahiti, and the latter appeared to push, the Greycliffe over, striking her twice forward and amidships.—<(P«A.).
