LIMERICK WINS CANTERBURY CUP. WILD PIGEON BEATS DO REE. DAY FOR OUTSIDERS. The third day of the C.J.C. meeting proved an outing for runners little fancied on the totalisator, and big prices were paid in many events. Limerick proved himself a genuine stayer in defeating Footfall and Star Stranger in the Canterbury Cup, the longest flat race in the Dominion, while Wild Pigeon occasioned surprise by outclassing Doree in the Oaks Stakes. Outsiders in Sir Roy and Great Charter won the two principal handicap events. CHRISTCHURCH, November 9. The third day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting was held to-day. Rain overnight had softened the course, but the going was still very good, although soft. The weather was fine. The attendance was not so large as on the preceding days. The totalisator handled £41,034, as compared with £42,038 last year, a decrease of £lOO4. Results:— Port Cooper Hurdles, IJm. —2, Red Fuchsia (A. McDonald), 1; 1, Kaikahu, 2; 4, Aberfeldy, 3. Also’ started: 3, Koauau; 6, Dubious; 5, Beauty Light. Red Fuchsia was first over the last fence and went on to win easily by five lengths from Kaikahu, with Aberfeldy another four lengths away third. Beauty Light was fourth. Time, 3min 16sec. Limerick went to the front at the mile and a quarter post and thereafter the speed was on. Turning into the straight. Footfall passed Star Stranger and drew near Limerick, but the latter, when shaken up, went on to win comfortably by four lengths from Footfall. Star Stranger was five lengths further back. Coming into the straight Doree and Vigilance were together in the lead, but half way down the straight Doree slowed up and Wild Pigeon finished very strongly to win by five lengths, with Vigilance three lengths away third. Turning into the Money Peer began a brilliant effort from the back, and sustaining his run, he won by a length from Grand National, with Avro a neck away third. Kindle was fourth.
