RADIO NOTES.

BY “DETECTOR.” Last Tuesday evening an excellent programme, which included plenty of variety, was provided from the Auckland station, IYA. Unfortunately a ship near New Zealand was .transmitting by spark Morse on a 450-mefrre wave length and at times interfered with the reception from this station. Atmospheric disturbances have been noticeable during the past few days, while fading is very pronounced, especially on the New Zealand stations which have been to some extent the cause of “mushy” receptions. It is reported that another high power station will be erected in or near Sydney in the near future. “G.C.H.” (Masterton) informs the wrter that late on the evening of June 4 he was able to pick up the Hobart station, 7ZL, when “the announcer of that station stated that they were testing out on a power of 3000 watts aerial input and transmitting on a wave length of 516 metres. The number of licenses issued up to June 2, including listeners, amateur transmitters and dealers, now totals 19,579. Work on the new Wellington station, 2YA, which is expected t 6 be heard at any time now, is being pushed forward in the erection of the electrical department. Some of the testing may be done with the transmitting aerial, and will demonstrate the qualities of the station, but most probably the preliminary adjustments will be carried out on an artificial aerial which will not be heard by listeners. The aerial has the same characteristics as the proper aerial except its radiating powers, and is a closed circuit containing inductance and capacity equal to that of the proper aerial and a resistance capable of absorbing the normal output of the station. The energy which would have radiated under’ regular operations is simply wasted in heat. The use of this device enables the operators to carry out tests at any time without risk of causing any interference.
