The contract let by the Moroa Water Race Committee for the deepening of the head race and intake on the Waiohine river above Woodside is proceeding steadily. The constant changes in the course of the river has caused concern to the Featherston county and the Greytown borough, who arc the controlling authorities, for a number of years, and it is anticipated that a mote uniform supply of water over the many miles of water races will result. A tractor demonstration indicating the possibilities of the use of power-drawn scoops was given to those interested at the scene of operations on Tuesday. Kerbside Pumps. Local suppliers of petrol have installed three bowsers on the kerbside of the main street. One could with advantage have been erected nearer the edge of the footpath at a busy point and pedestrians require to steer a straight and circumspect course when negotiating this part of the footpath. Basketball. Both the Greytown teams —the Old Girls and the High School —carried off premiership honours this year, and a very pleasant social evening was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Monday evening to celebrate the occasion. Racing. The Greytown-owned horses Lady Ideal, Paraki and the Greyspear two-year-old Grey Mist appear in the Carterton lacing nominations and Lady Ideal and Grey Mist are nominated in stronger company at the forthcoming Wellington meeting. These horses are well-bred enough for any racing judges and a win for their popular owner would be well received. Ministerial Visit. The Hon. R. A. Wright (Minister of Education) and the Hon. A. D. McLeod (Minister of Lands) were the guests of the chairman of the School Committee, the Rev. W. F. Stent and Mrs. Stent during their visit to Greytown on Monday on educational matters. Nix, the well-known Featherston rifle shot, is making a good recovery from his recent operation. Mt. Hector Track. An endeavour is being made to revive local interest in mountaineering, and it is hoped that the Mt. Hector Track Committee, which did sueh excellent work in the past, will shortly take an active part in popularising the beauties of the Hector track and the charm of the Tauherenikau Valley. Continuous Telephone. As a result of the installation of the continuous telephone several new subscribers are about to join the Telephone Exchange.
