Nine of Spades made amends for his recent defeats by scoring a dual victory on Saturday. Both wins were easily gained, and he appeared to have been improved by the racing at Manawatu. Joy King’s victory in the Royal Stakes still further complicates matters with respect to which is the best two-year-old of the season, and -we shall have to wait far another meeting between Joy King, Lysander and Commendation before we can get an accurate idea of their merits. Tukia won her first race this season when she annexed the Bowen Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday. She is "a fast mare that should win again presently, especially if as well treated by the handicapper as she was on Saturday. The most successful jockey at Tauherenikau was D. Cotton who rode three winners and he also rode Degage when she dead-heated with Bumptious. The Opaki apprentice A. Brown also rode three winners, while C. McGovern and H. Were each rode two.. The most extensive . speculation at Ellerslie was connected with the Glasgow Handicap—the sum. of £20,156 10/ being invested. Some people were inclined to think when Te Monanui changed hands £2 months back for 500gns, that the son of Potoa was advantageously sold. Mrs W. D. Graham, who bought Te Monanui is, however, in the happy position of knowing that her speculation has brought a rich return, for to date the winnings of Te Monanui under her colours amount to £4170. Decoy Bird, the Australian-bred son of Humbug, was trying hard to lose, his maiden status in the Midsummer Handicap, run at Ellerslie, but he failed to score, and his finishing effort was marred by a swerve. Royal Divorce carried a bandage on his off fore fetlock when he went out to contest the A.R.C. Handicap and he seemed to be favouring the affected limb at the finish of the race. The English-bred mare Ballymoy 11. has been looked upon a» a smart sprinter, but, having failed to win a racp, much curiosity was evinced as to the shape bidding would take when she went into the sale-ring at Ellerslie on Thursday, and whether Mr Friedlander would allow her to go into other hands. The mare was quitted at 7Gogns. which is 350gns in excess of the sum at which s}le was bought by Mr Friedlander two years back. What a wonder is old Surveyor! The veteran, who has onlyxbceu in training a short while after seizing another season at the stud, figured anwng the starters for the A.R.C. Handicap, hnd setting a strong pace he led the field for over a mile after two furlongs of the journey h:id been completed. The old house walked away apparently quite sound after race, and he is entitled to be .kept in\. mind for events ahead.
