PAHIATUA TOURNAMENT. WAIRARAPA PLAYERS IN THE FINALS. Rain delayed the opening of the Pahiatua tennis tournament on New Year’s Day, but a start was made on Stturclay, despite intermittent showers, and continued yesterday. Both singles championships provided a full quota of stern tussles, leaving an open outlook in the semifinals. Wilson (Pahiatua) gave H. Johnsoh (Mastertoh) a great three-set go in the second round of the men’s singles, and McConachie (Feilding) fought hard against Swain son, superior courtcraft being his undoing In the semi-finals are: Swanson (Pahiatua), Welch (Masterton), Hooper (Palmerston. North), and Johnsen (Masterton). In the men’s championship doubles Welch and Johnson (Masterton) came through to the semi-finals after a narrow victory over Wilson and Gregorio and McConachie and Hows. They meet Swainson and Hooper in the final. The ladies’ singles provided sound tennis, keenly contested. Mrs. Smith (Palmerston North) carried too many guns for Miss Armistead. Mrs Potter who won the Wellington provin cial championship some ten years ago, outplayed Miss Grant, so with her sisters, Mrs Booth (Carterton), and Mrs K. Groves (Masterton), and Miss Gardner is in the finals. One of the best matches of the tournament was in the third round of the combined doubles, when Mackie and Miss Armistead (Woodville) downed' Swainsoh and Miss' Lenz, Macki/ playing a fine game and smashing with deadly accuracy.
