RUSHING THE GOBS.

MELBOURNE (ADIES’ OFFENSIVE. STORMING A BATTLESHIP. (Press Association— Copyright) (Received 8.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 30.—There were wild scenes at a dance given by American sailors on the Oklahoma. Each of her 2000 men was permitted to invite one guest, but there were 3000 guests aboard when the dance started, and ' 32,000 filled Prince’s Pier and packed the foreshore back to the Port Melbourne railway station. Motor cars also, filler! with guests for the ball, could not get further than Montague as the road was choked with vehicles. At 10 p.m. the officers had to call out marines to keep people off the ship. The early arrivals did not wait for the gangways to be lowered but were pulled aboard up mooring ropes and through the portholes. On the pier women and girls were fainting in the crush as the enormsus crowds attempted to storm the ship, but were kept off by marines. The dance otherwise was a great success. At the Lord Mayor’s ball 4000 attended. It was one of the most brilliant and successful functions of the visit, only marred by a shortage of bread at supper owing to the great attendance.—(P.A.) , .
