The Works Committee reported that permission had been granted to Messrs Knutson and Jamieson for alteration to several premises, and a new dwelling in Clifton Avenue for Mr M. O’Reilly. Permission was given for water connection to two sections in Clifton Avenue. It was recommended that the Council fa/vourably consider the offer to remove the trees standing in Augustus street, the work to be, done to the satisfaction of the Council.

The overseer reported that watertables had; been cleaned in various parts of the borough. Patching had been done in Broadway, Pembroke street, part of Belvedere street and Rhodes street. Some 50 yards metalling had been completed on Broadway, and a portion of Kent street. Roots of trees caused a break in the low pressure pipes at the mains, and the weather has held up the work of repairing. It was recommended that the intake at the river be cleaned as soon as possible. The pipes have arrived for Wakelin street with the exception of a connection for the main. The swings have arrived for Carrington Park and can be erected at any time.

I The sanitary inspector reported having made several inspections and found everything satisfactory. Three cases were discovered where rubbish was being allowed to accumulate and had been attended to. Trees in Several streets had been topped, and Carrington Park is being given a general clean up. The Gas Manager reported gas manufactured for June was 618,900 cubic feet. The average amount manufactured per day for this month, is 20,500 cubic feet. One new service was installed and meter connected up. Also 26 services have been attended to and four metres were changed. Particulars of a day test meter were sub.mitted, with a recommendation that one be purchased. Gas consumed was 544,200 cubic feet, net value £254 0s 3d, compared with 577,700 ft in June, 1924. For the period to July the receipts were £1526 10s. A request from the Discharged Prisoners ’ Aid Society for financial assistance was referred to the Finance Committee for favourable consideration.

Staples and Co. wrote declining to contribute towards the cost of kerbing and channelling in front of the Marquis Hotel in Broadway as it was already provided for in the original covenant when the land was dedicated to the borough. The Railway Department replied to a request for a wider culvert at bridge 67, stating that it would not remedy flood difficulties. It was decided to go further into the matter. The offer of W. J. Candy to remove the pine trees in Augustus street for the wood was accepted. Or. Churchouso urged that provision should he made for kerbing the side streets, a portion to be done each year. In reply to Cr. Churchouso as to why the rates had been increased this year, the Deputy-Mayor stated that it was due partly to the purchase of a firefighting pump and to the increased cost of street lighting. The increase might be remitted next year—The clerk stated that the increased rate would produce £3BB, while the increased expenditure was £lOO for street lighting and £540 for the pump.
