SPRINGBANK JERSEYS.

CLEARING SALE. The Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-op. Association, Ltd., Stock Department, held a sale yesterday of Jersey pedigree stock on account of Mr E. 8. Holdaway (“Springbank,” Ballance). The stock were in good condition and attracted : buyers. from Southern Hawkes Bay, Foxton, Wairarapa and Bush districts. The appointments were in good order and the sale was put through in good time. Keen competition was shown for the best lots, especially those showing good returns under semi-official test. It was unfortunate for the vendor that more of those catalogued had not been put under test; many of similar strain to those tested, but: without records, were not competed for. Four lots were subject to reserve prices, but few were passed in, which also applied to those which proved not to be in calf. Mr H. H. Phillips (Te Rehunga) purchased the highest priced lot at 62gns for the cow “Connie Brighteyes” (Lavels Orange Lad—Consolation). This cow is still under test and has produced 5751bs of butterfat in 330 days. The test records wexe produced under hard conditions, without forced feeding. Mr Phillips also secured “Springbank Ringlet” (Mona’s AHy—Ringdell) at 55gns and "Springbank Ella” (Mona’s Ally—Trethella’s Duchess) at Signs. Mr Charles Smith (Martinborough) secured some good lots, including ‘ ‘ Springbank Hettie ’ ’ (Hope’s Lad—Springbank Hasty) 58gns and Springbank Topsy (Mona’s Ally— Lass’s Present) 43gns and Fairy Kitten (Hope’s Lad—Springbank Kitten; 38gns. Messrs S. Austin and H. F. Hughes (Foxton) bought several good lots. A pleasing feature was thef-num-ber of neighbouring farmers competing; they secured several lots of good type. Mr A. Hay bought a, good number. There was a moderate demand for bulls. The adult females averaged 25Jgns. Prior to the sale, Mr H. H. Phillips gave an interesting demonstration on the Jersey, and was accorded a vote of thanks by acclamation.
