THE WATER SUPPLY.

PROPOSALS TO COMPLETE. ‘ AN ISSUE FOE POLL. A» serious problem, affecting the water supply of the South Ward was mentioned at the Borough Council meeting last night' by Cr. W. ’Kemp, who stated that Short street, Michael street, Donald street, South road, and South Belt were being reticulated with drainage, yet were still wiihout water. It was ridiculous laying one without thaother, and the next Council would be confronted with the problem of having to reticulate these streets .out of revenue. If the money was all taken from the Waterworks Account, there would be £2BOO less to relieve the general rate, and it would be necessary to strike another rate to make np the deficiency. A loan would have to be raised to complete the reticulation of the whole of the South Ward. He suggested that the Mayor tackle the problem before he vacated office.

Cr. Watson remarked that the principle of connecting the North Ward with the South Ward was wrong. The latter supply was hardly sufficient to meet present demands, with the present lOinch mains, and they would always get trouble if they tried to do it. It was higher pressure they wanted, whereas many thought that by getting a bigger pipe they got more water. Cr. Jordan suggested that the matter be considered at the special meeting next week, and that a poll be taken on South Ward reticulation alone. Ratepayers of the South Ward would then see that there was not sufficient water and that they would eventually have to go up to the gorge for higher pressure. He strongly opposed placing both issues before the ratepayers at the next elections and prejudicing the gorge scheme. On the suggestion of the Mayor it was decided to instruct the engineer to prepare a report on the cost of completing the South Ward reticulation, and that a proposal-be agreed to next week to place before the ratepayers.
