BY WELLINGTON. ON HEAVY GROUND.

Wellington, July 20. —Fifteen thousand witnessed the Soccer match, Chinese ’Varsity team against Wellington. Though the visitors were beaten by 4 goals to 0, they gave a splendid exhibition, rousing the spectators to cheers.

In the first spell the Chinese set up a hot attack which surprised both, the team and the onlookers. Ewing, the Wellington goalkeeper, was equal to the occasion. The ground was wet and slippery from recent rains. This evidently handicapped the visitors, who for the remainder of the spell were on the defence.

The Chinese did not charge their opponents while tht ball was in play. Lathian, Campbell, McElligott and Barton scored. One was due to the Chinese goalkeeper slipping.—(P.A.)
