Two Masterton youths will appear before the Magistrate's Court on Friday on a charge of stalking deer out of season.
James Dee, charged with arson in connection with the lire at Keith Ramsay and Co.’s factory, (Dunedin), was committed for trial, on bail. Forty-five members of Parliament have signified their intention of attending the All Black match on Palmerston North on Saturday. There are at present 58 patients in the Masterton Public Hospital, including two in the maternity ward and seven in the isolation ward.
In the Eclipse Stakes run at Sandown Park, England, on Friday, Mr Sol Joel’s Polyphontes beat the Derby winner Papyrus by two lengths. A number of Oamaru school girls .arc writing to the girls of different schools in England, givng them particulars of the climatic and other attractions of the district.
The gate takings at the Memorial Park on Saturday were £6l. carterton's contribution to the Rugby Union coffer from the Masterton-Carterton clash was £l3.
Ernest Edward McFadgen, who pleaded guilty to ten charges of theft committed at Carterton, was admitted to two yeafs probation at Wellington on Saturday. A message of good wishes for a successful match against Gisborne was received by the Masterton Chess Club on Saturday from Mr H. L. Thirtle (Palmerston North), past-president of the club.
The two young mon who recently broke into a hair dressers saloon at Woodville, and afterwards committing theft at Fcilding, wore sentenced to termg of 12 months and six months' imprisonment. After a further conference between the Ohai (Invercargill) miners and the owners it w’as annaunced that a settlement had been reached, subject to ratification by the Miners’ Union. The terms -are not disclosed, but if accepted, the men will resume to-day. Coal stocks arc at a low ebb.
“All I can say for the defendant is that ho is an ingrate and a liar; I believe his evidence is untruthful, and that he has been ungrateful." So said Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., in the Christchurch Magistrate's Court in a case in which a farmer claimed the repayment of passage-money provided for an emigrant from England. While proceeding to his home at Bangitumau on Saturday night, Ronald Campbell, who was riding a motor cycle, collided with a cyclist, named Hutchinson, who was travelling in the same direction. Hutchinson, who is an elderly man, was knocked down and had a leg broken besides injuring his head. He was admitted to the Masterton Hospital where he is progressing satisfactorily.
The June issue of tho “N’.Z.L. Quarterly," published by tho N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., contains many very readable articles on many subjects of interest. It is illustrated with a wealth of artistic pictures and photographs, among which are several of New Zealand interest. The journal is very creditable to its publishers and is well worth reading.
The debentures for the recent loan of £50,000 raised in London by the Bank df New Zealand for the Auckland Electric Pow’er Board have been handed over to the bank in Auckland for transmission to London. The issue was in the London market only a few hours. The applications totalled £960,000, the loan was more than three times subscribed, and was 5 per cent at £97.
A disastrous fire, resulting in heavy damage, occurred at Torstonson, Ltd., timber mill, Palnierston North, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Despite the strenuous efforts of the brigade, the main portion of the premises were completely destroyed and 40,000 feet of joinery timber and much valuable machinery were lost. The insurances were £5BO on the factory and building, £5OO on the machinery, and £lOO on the timber in the building destroyed. The timber in the stocks not touched by the flames was insured for £2OOO.
