Miss Griffiths, of Gore, has been promoted to the Masterton Telephone Exchange as supervisor. Mr W. J. McCulloch, Government Agricultural Instructor, will arrive in Masterton to-day to make final arrangements for the Farmers’ Farm School. Mr H. Cornelius (Pahiafua) contemplates a trip to the Homeland, and on Saturday the Pahiatua County Council granted him six months’ leave of absence. In the list of midshipmen of the cruiser Danae appears the name of Viscount Borodale. It is not generally known that the Viscount is a son of Earl Beatty. Mr J. Cooper (Eketahuna) has been a member of the Newman School Committee continuously for 24 years, and is just entering upon his twenty-fifth year, a fine record of service to the school. Yesterday was the fourteenth anniversary of the accession of His Majesty King George V. The :hips of the Special Service Squadron were dressed with flags. Flags were also • flown on the public buildings in Masterton. The headmaster’s report for the Solway School says gloom was cast over the school in April by the sudden death of William Elder, a very promising pupil and the sympathy of the whole district went out to the bereaved parents. Mr Walter Joseph Hibbard, manager of the Tarurutangi dairy factory (Taranaki) dropped dead at his home on Friday. Death was duo to heart failure. Deceased was about 43 years of age, and lived with his w r ife and 4 children in the house provided by the dairy company. Sir Edward Elgar has been appointed Master of the King’s Music, in succession to Sir Walter Parratt, who was organist to Queen Victoria, organist of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, and Master of the King’s Music for many years. Sir Edward Elgar is probably the most famous of modern English composers. Ordinary Seaman R. T. Brissenden, * of H.M.S. He was accidentally killed on August 17, 1912, while the Terra Nova was surveying French Pass, and the tody was interred ashore. On Sunday at the Masterton hospital the death occurred of Mrs On Hing, . wife of Mr Harry On Hing, of Mas- . terton. A daughter of Tern Shun, now a well-known Sydney merchant, Mrs On Hing was bom at Canton, China, 42 years ago. Mr On Hing brought her to Masterton from China •»* 5 years ago. Her husband, two small daughters and a son survive her. The mortal remains w’ill be taken to China for interment. The funeral of the late Mrs A. J. ■Percy took place at the Masterton cemetery yesterday, a large and representative cortege paying their respectu to the family of the deceased lady. The services at the church and the graveside were performed by the Very Rev. Monsignor McKenna, V.G., assisted by the Rev. Father Devlin. The pallbearers were Messrs W. J., J. Frank, and W. Percy, and Messrs T. t and W. Killery, brothers of the deceased.
