CONCERT RECITAL.

A MUSICAL SUCCESS. A musical treat might aptly describe the very enjoyable concert-re-cital given by Miss A. Bary, L.A.8., and her pupils, assisted by leading artists, in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium last night in aid of the installation of electric light in the Association buildings. There was a good attendance, and lovers of good music spent a very happy evening with the old composers. The entertainment was essentially a pianoforte recital, and Miss Bary has every reason to be proud or its musical success. The most popular items were the piano duos, and of these probably Saint Saens’s “Grand Polonaise' 1 was the best. Played by the Misses Bary and D. Lee, it was rendered with superb technique, great power of tone and delicacy of touch. Sense of rhythm and beauty of phrasing were faithfully combined by both players. The other numbers “Entree des Clans” and “Gigufc et Final” (Saint Saens) by the Misses Bary and Kecdwell and “Pas des Cymbales” (Chami nade), by the Misses Lee and Keedwell, were also faithfully rendered. No less pleasing were the piano duos. Eight hands participated, the Misses Loe, Ansti<-c, Keedwell and Hedley playing Mendelssohn's immortal “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and “Ruy Blas,” the players relying for effect on a broad solid style, with a pure sonorous tone and straightforward interpretation. Beet ho ven ,’s ** Minuet” was artistically rendered by Miss Eileen Hutchison, while Miss Lee was equally pleasing in* Rubinsteins “La Rove,” and Chopin’s “Berceuse.” Mr T. C. Wood, L.A.8., who has not been heard in public for some time, gave a pleasing rendering of Huhn’s “In v ictus,” and Schumann’s “The Two Grenadiers.” Mr E. J. Heffcr was heard to advantage in Homer’s “Requiem” and “A Banjo Song. ” Master Stewart Petersen’s contribution of Tour’s “Second Romance,” and Wider’s “Serenade” gave him ample opportunity to display the purity of tone and stirring resonance peculiar to tho violin, the items bfing cordially received. Mrs Hebley pleasingly sung “My Task,” the. voice lending balance to i the programme. i Master Douglas Edwards, who recited “The Fool,” and the Misses Babs Waters, Peggy .Tames and Mary Logan who danced, were well received in their respective items. A squad °f gymnasium girls also assisted with an exhibition of scarf drill. At the conclusion of the entertainment Mr P. M. Velvin, general secretary of the Y.M.C.A., thanked Miss Bary for her generous assistance, and also the members of the party who contributed to the programme.
