ELECTION OF COMMITTEES. MASTERTON CENTRAD. Only nine householders attended the meeting at the Masterton Central School last night, Mr J. E. MeV. Catwell presiding. An apology was received from Mr W. R. Nicol. In moving the adoption of th© report and balance sheet (already published in “The Age”) the chairman said that the school had been managed very efficiently and the financial position was much improved. Hie expressed appreciation of the work of the staff.

Mr A. Hendry seconded the motion, saying that it would be his last opportunity of doing so. He thought that the school, thanks to Mr R. C. Drummond, was second to non© in New Zealand.

The motion was passed. There being no more nominations than 9, those nominated were declared elected. They were Messrs J. E. MeV. Calwell, R. Russell, W. R. Nicol, C. Braggins, F. Whitton, A. P. Black, A. Williams A. Miller and G. L. Scrivener.

At the meeting of the committee, later, Mr Calwell was re elected chairman, and Mr A. W. G. Tiollings was re-appointed secretary. The date of meetings was fixed as the second Wednesday in the month.

The chairman drew attention to a circular issued by the New Zealand Educational Institute concerning the average roll for school calculations. Mr Drummond said that at present the method of allotting teachers on che basis of the average attendance instead of on the average roll was unfair. An epidemic and bad weather would reduce the average attendance considerably. The average roll might be 580 and by virions causes the average attendance might be brought down to 500, an i the staff would be H td on th© latter figure. I'iovision riiould be made for the former number. Again, the average attendance varied more than the average roll, necessitating frequent changes staff.

After the chairman had endorsed Mr Drummond's remarks Mi© following resolution was passed: “That this Committee unanimously supports th© proposal that staffing and capitation allowance should be based on the average roll of the school and not on th© average attendance.” . It wag decided to send a copy of the resolution to Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., and to the Education Department. MASTERTON WEST. The annual meeting at the West school was presided over by Mr A. Donald. About 22 householders were present. Apologies were received from Messrs W. T. Grundy (Education Beard) and D. Douglas. The annual report-and financial statement (recently published in “Tho Age”) were read and adopted on the motion of the chairman and Mr A. Robertson. Speaking to the report, the chairman said the interest taken by the householders in the West school district had always been gratifying, and he held no fears that it would continue to be so. The facilities at the school were ideal for carrying out primary educaton, and in this respect the children should be most thankful. The interest the children displayed themselves was a considerable help and their efforts in the annual bazaar had, with the cooperation of the parents, resulted in a sum of £6O being made. The following committee was elected:—Messrs L. Clarke, D. Douglas, A. Donald, J. V. Gordon, J. L, Hughes, T. Leete, H. S. Loudon, F. W. Pointonj A. Robertson. The unsuccessful candidates were Messrs A. D. Low and E. F. Fairbrother. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring committee. A resolution was carried in support of a request by the Teachers ’ Institute that the grading of schools be computed on the average roll and not the average attendance. At a subsequent meeting Mr A. Donald was re-elected chairman and Mr H. S. Loudon, seciretary. EAST TARATAHI. A fair number of householders attended the meeting at the East Taratahi school, Mr G. E. Allen being in the chair. Reference was made to the good treatment meted out by the Education Board, a new boundary fence having been erected and a new library established. The old committee was re-elected. They were Messrs G. E. Allen (chair, man, secretary and treasurer),; N. G. Rayner, S. G. Green, L. Southey and D. O’Brien. KAITUNA. Thirteen were present at the Kaituna householders’ meeting, when the following committee was elected:— Messrs J. McGillicuddy (chairman, secretary and treasurer), G. Pain, J. Taylforth, R. Taylforth. and S. P. Shaw. A resolution was passed supporting the proposal to adopt the average roll instead of the average attendance as a basis for staffing and capitation. EKETAHUNA. The following committee was elected: —Messrs J. S. Tripe (chairman), C. C. Smith (secretary), W. R. Hornblow, A. Fredrickson, H. A. Thomson, Dr. E. M. Simmers, S. Marenzi, J. F. Bailey, and H. E. Greatjiead. A resolution was passed strongly protesting against the continual changing of teachers, it being pointed out that this interfered not only with the smooth working of the staff but also with the education of the children.
