PLOT THAT FAILED.
ATTEMPTED ESCAPE FROM GAOL CONFEDERATES” ON TRIAL. (Received 8.50 p.m.) Melbourne, March. 24.—The trial has commenced of the five men, Armsj Costello, Toolan, Leslie Taylor and Thomas Taylor, on a charge of conspiring to assist Angus Murray to escape from the Melbourne gaol, on January 18. A witness Gleeson, an employee at the gaol, gave evidence that Costello, who was a fellow warder, offered him money if he would go off sick to enable the plot to be carried out. Toolan also made an offer of another job and a cut out of £250 when the job was finished.
Plans for effecting the escape were shown to him.—(P.A.)
