LANTERN PARADE.
MASTERTON LIVENS UP. CARNIVAL ACTIVITY. Pleasure-seeking residents of Masterton entered enthusiastically, with the true carnival spirit, into last night ’s Gala Week attraction—the lantern parade and fancy costume masquerade. Before the appointed time the streets were athrong with merry revellers, many attired in motley garb, and all with lanterns lit. The procession moved off,- headed by the band, and as it passed beneath the shaded recesses the veiled lights from the Chinese lanterns lent a distinctly Oriental atmosphere to the function. Well over 1000 people followed the parade to the park, where, in an instant, the assemblage broke off with a careless, free abandon to follow the. lights. All were out for a jolly time, and all had it, bevies of merry revellers being loth to leave the park at the conclusion of the programme. A joyous alfresco entertainment, comprising vocal items and orchestral band selections, kept proceedings alive, while themore frivolous juveniles disported themselves joking at the expense of others. A spacious ring was formed in front of the crowded stand, where dancing was indulged in to music supplied by the Pioneer Orchestra and the Municipal Band. DANCING COMPETITIONS. Part of the evening’s jollifications on the park oval were a waltzing competition and a similar event for foxtrotters. Mr W. G. Lamb was the adjudicator in each instance, and found it a matter of extreme difficulty to separate the contestants. His decisions were:— Waltzing.—Mr Haeata and Miss B. Reid 1/ Mr L. Wadham’s prize; Mr Turner and Miss C. Reid 2, Mr D. Edwards’s prize; Mr Haeata and Miss Kirton 3, Gala Committee’s prize. Fox Trot.—Mr Rodgers and Miss B. Reid 1, Mr G. H. Perry’s prize; Mr Wintringham and Miss Howard 2, Mi W. G. Lamb’s prize.
