Sir David Bruce, the celebrated pathologist, has been elected next Pre. sident of the British Association. Mr H. J. H. Blow, formerly undersecretary to Public. Works and Mines, is with his daughter, Mrs L. Clark (Essex street). The friends of Mr W. Coulter, formerly of Masterton, will regret to learn that he is seriously ill in the Dargaville Hospital. The death is announced of Mr E. Harold Ballachey, 8.A., aged 49, only surviving child of the Rev. W. B:d--lachey, who was vicar of Carterton many years ago and has lately been residing in Wellington. Mrs Ballachey is also dead. Mr B. Pook, of the staff of “The Age,” was so unfortunate as to sustain a broken collarbone while playing football at the Memorial Park on Saturday. The Rev. 8. H. D. L’eryman (Carter ton) preached at the Kuripuni Methodist Church yesterday morning, nt Solway in the afternoon, and at Master ton in the evening. Messrs R. Smith, R. McLeod, F. Arkle, K. H. Nelson, L. Campbell, J. Montgomerie and E. C, Jolly have beon re elected managers of the Martinborough Presbyterian Church. The Mayor and Mayoress of Featiierson, Mr J. W7 Card and Miss Card, arc at Wanganui, and will probably be away for the week. During their stay they will be guests of Mr H. E. Card. , The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) who is still confined to his room in Wellington, is progressing satisfactorily, and it ig hoped he will take his seat on the Court of Appeal on October 1. The engagement is announced of Miss Marjorie Hughan, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Gordon Hughan, Carterton, to Mr Alan M. Barr, youngest son of Mr and Mrs John Barr, Nelson Square, Picton. At St. Matthew’s Parish Social tomorrow the opportunity will be taken to bid farewell to the Rev. G. K. Moir, and to welcome the Rev. O. Gibson. Visiting choirs to the patronal Festival service have also been invited to be present. It was reported at the meeting of the Plunket Society that Mrs Chenr.ells (president) would leave on a visit to Australia next month and, that Mrs Coradine (vice-president) has kindly consented to take up the president’s’ duties. Viscountess Jcliicoe and the* Hon. Luey Jellicoe were passengers by the Aki Maru, which has sailed for China. At St. James’s Church, Auckland, the marriage took place recently of Mr C. B. Ralph, of Masterton, and Miss Daisy McKenzie, of Waipu, Auckland. The Bev. Thoma 9 Halliday officiated. On Saturday the death occurred at Wellington of Mr Richard Evatt, formerly Chief Clerk in the Agricultural Department. The deceased was born in India, was educated at Home, and came to New Zealand in 1878.. He was very well -known in the Wairarapa district, making many friends here on his visits on behalf of the Department. Two sons, Messrs Thomas and George, and two daughters, Miss D. Evatt and Mrs R. Wilkinson, survive him.

At the supper adjournment at the Soldiers’ Club on Saturday evening the honorary and active members of the club gathered to make a presents tion to their popular secretary (Mr H, Saville Smith) who is to be married today to Miss Reader, daughter of Mr and Mrs A. E. Reader, Mt. Bruce. The presentation took the form of a dinner service and in a very happy speech the president (Mr Jock Neill) wished Mr Smith and his bride elect all prosperity and happiness. Mr Smith responded feelingly.
