A NOVEL CASE.

IN BRITISH LAW. CONDEMNED MAN WITNESS. (Received 5.5 p.m.) London, Sept. 21.—For the first time in the history of British crime a man sentenced to death was called as a witness by the Crown. The ease arose at Liverpool on Jume 1.1 when two armed men raided the post office, and a man was shot. Rhelan, a blacksmith, who w-as one of Mie raiders, was caught and sentenced to death, but, as there was no evidence as to who fired the fatal shot, the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Phelan’s evidence was required today for the prosecution of two men charged with providing the firearms used in the raid. When Phelan came into the box be refused to answer questions. The prosecution asked to lie allowed to treat the witness hs hostile. The case was remanded at prosecution ’s request and Phelan returned to gaol.— (A. and N.Z.)
