BEAUTIFYING THE TOWN.
The movement which is foreshadowed by the meeting held last night with a view to beautifying the town of Masterton is one that deserves the support of the whole community. There arc some things in life which do not pay cash dividends but which are nevertheless of direct value to the community, and a beautiful town to livein is one of them. Masterton is not exactly an ugly town Considering the very bad laying-out in the first place and the fact that it is practically flat, it is passably pretty; but there is no denying the fact that it could be very much improved. There are open spaces and vacant plots and reserves in all directions which arc more or less eyesores, and there are spots now left neglected, which with some care and taste would be rendered beauty spots of the highest order. The meeting last night took the view that the society which it is proposed to form should be financed by the voluntary subscriptions and rhe efforts of its members. That is in tune with the aesthetic object which it has in view. If the public has any real desire to live in beautiful surroundings it will be prepared to make the necessary effort to achieve its end; and no doubt the society will receive due encouragement both financially and otherwise, from the city fathers.
